Drama Production

The Little Mermaid production finally came to its culmination, featuring a cast of over 25 girls ranging from grades 6 to 12. It was a huge project, to say the least.

The Grade 10 crew consisted of four student directors, two of whom also doubled as backstage managers. There were two production assistants who were happy to be snappy when deadlines had to be met! The set design team paid attention to the finest details, teleporting us from King Triton’s court to Prince Eric’s royal palace and back again. The costume designers worked tirelessly to create magic with every costume – mermaids to jellyfish, sailors to crabs. Every sequin, every wig, and every false eyelash was perfect. Their designs were nothing short of spectacular; they stole the show! The choreographers, who also took on the role of house managers, ensured the musical numbers had everyone’s feet tapping.

The editing team spent weeks ensuring that anything too cheesy or inappropriate in the original script was replaced with comedy and satire for our all-female cast. The sound and lighting crew trained hard to make sure they never missed a cue, providing perfect sound effects and seamless lighting transitions between scenes. The marketing team created excitement and were responsible for a great opening night, working closely with the admin team at ALS. The finance team happily handled the paperwork for each department.

The actors, however, were truly the heart and soul of the production. They worked tirelessly to learn their lines, bring their characters to life, and make every moment on stage unforgettable. Their commitment and energy were unmatched, and despite the inevitable challenges, they pushed through with passion and determination. When unforeseen circumstances arose, brave actresses stepped in at the last minute without missing a beat. One of them was an MYP teacher who, despite not initially auditioning, was so natural on stage and beloved by everyone that we couldn’t understand why she hadn’t tried out in the first place! Each actor brought something unique to the stage, and their chemistry made the production feel alive. Their hard work, dedication, and spirit truly made the show shine.

All in all, it was a huge success, thanks to Ms. Shabnam, the admin team, and Ms. Huda, who accommodated extra rehearsals and supported the entire cast and crew. So much drama, a little chaos, countless hours of work, and yes, even some tears and distress at times… Will we do it again next year? Who knows; let’s see!
